Group Psychotherapy
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a dynamic process for the individual joining the group and the existing members, often consisting of 4-10 people who agree to come together for the purpose of processing something together.
Group sessions occur on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis. The structure of the group is often determined by the therapist. The structure refers to the function of the group, how long the group will run each night and how often the group meets.
Function: There is a wide range of possible functions for a group. The function is similar to a title, and generally defines the groups intent or purpose, such as “Personal Growth & Wellness Group,” “Family Constellations” or “Work and Life Stress.” These are just examples. The nature of a group may be specific or it may be more open and unspecified, which grants the group a high amount of flexibility in how it operates.
Length: The length of a group in this instance, refers to how long the group agrees to stay together when they meet. Groups may run for 60, 90 or 120 minutes.
Frequency: This would be how often the group meets. It’s important to know whether your group is meeting on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis so that you can see if it matches with your schedule and availability.
During the actual group, members are free to openly discuss and process anything that is connected to the nature of their distress. You may have a clear question for the group, or something more deep that you want to address. One of the first things you will learn in group is that “everyone and everything belongs,” which is a powerful concept in action.
*If there is a group you are interested in attending, please call and ask about its availability. If you have an idea for a new group that you’d like to participate in, please feel free to suggest it and perhaps we can get something started. In that case, it always helps if you have a few people who you know want to join in.
