Individual Psychotherapy

Broadly, therapy is a healing process or treatment that takes place between a therapist and their client.

Individual Psychotherapy

Individual therapy is a unique and personal experience. Some people come in with a clearly defined reason for seeking out treatment.  Others may know what they would like to explore further but not know how to go about it.  These frustrations tend to escalate over time and can leave a person feeling quite stuck.

Other times, the reason for therapy is less clear initially.  A person may just “have a feeling” that they want or need someone to talk with about what’s happening, or has happened, in their life.

In all matters, therapy begins with either a formal or informal assessment period.  Sometimes it will include paperwork, but my style of working with clients tends to be more relational with minimal focus on forms, worksheets or questionnaires unless it’s indicated. During the “assessment period,” we have the opportunity to determine if the client-therapist relationship is a good fit.

The “fit” refers to the quality of trust and comfort with your therapist; it is critical to any therapeutic relationship due to the nature of the work.  At the end of the day, it’s important that you believe it’s safe to open up, which of course takes time, patience and support.

Over time, your story will gradually unfold and become the living entity that we work with in the room.  My approach is patient, supportive and inquisitive.  It’s my nature to listen with intent and deep focus during our time together, while asking guiding questions or making observations to help gradually build new insights and awareness.
